What are Gait Disorders?
GAIT= WALKING

A persons walk or gait is as unique as a finger print

Viz. no two people have the same gait.

Problems in Gait can occur due to several reasons- starting from something as simple as a minor injury to something as major as a neurological or brain problem.

Evaluation of these walking disorders can be done in several ways- starting from simple observation known as "OBSERVATIONAL GAIT ANALYSIS" to computerized 3D- Motion and Data Capture which needs to be done in a Gait Laboratory.

One does need an expert to decipher the reason or the cause of the problem in Gait. Physical therapists are qualified to diagnose and treat these gait disorders through various exercises.
Balance Disorders can present in any age group with a variety of symptoms, due to many causes. It is important to recognize this, get a diagnosis and seek treatment.
 BALANCE DISORDERS IN THE MIDDLE – AGED & THE ELDERLY:
Difficulty in walking (gradual or sudden, Difficulty in the dark, on carpets, slippery, surfaces like the bathroom, Vertigo or Dizziness, Cervical Spondylosis, Loss of feeling or strength in the legs, Loss of confidence in your ability to get around, cross the road, or obstacles.,Changes in strength, balance, post-menopause in women, Falls, Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Long standing Diabetes / Diabetic Neuropathy, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Parkinsons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Amputation, Spine surgery.
MYTH: Older people are told that Imbalance and Deterioration of walking are an inevitable part of getting older! Or that Dizziness spells are all "in your imagination".
TRUTH: IMBALANCE AND DIZZINESS ARE NOT A NORMAL PART OF AGING. TESTING AND TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE.

 BALANCE DISORDERS IN CHILDREN:
Poor Balance in children can cause several problems from hypotonia, poor handwriting, difficulty in concentration, ADHD, ADD, poor performance academically, poor copying, poor grip and fine motor skills, poor skill in sports and play activities. All of these problems can be treated with a balance program. EARLIER done is BETTER.
MYTH: MY CHILD WILL OUT - GROW THE PROBLEM.
TRUTH: DO NOT WAIT FOR YOUR CHILD TO OUTGROW THE PROBLEM. SEEK TREATMENT. UNTIL THE AGE OF SIX IT IS MUCH SIMPLER FOR TREATMENT TO BE EFFECTIVE.
